'Let's Talk About Sex': History of Sexuality
26-27 July 2016, University of Exeter (Streatham Campus)
https://talkaboutsex2016.wordpress.com
This two day workshop aims to bring together postgraduate scholars and early career researchers (within 5 yrs of PhD completion) to meet together to showcase and discuss current work on the history of modern sexuality (c.1800-present day).
We welcome papers that consider the history of modern sexuality in all its forms, including but not limited to:
• Sexual discourses
• Histories of sexual practice
• Sexuality and the history of emotion
• Sexuality in its global context
We are particularly keen to hear work on the conceptual and methodological challenges associated with studying sexuality. As such, we welcome discussions of archival practice and thoughts on the role of theory in sexuality studies, as well as reflections on primary sources, in addition to traditional research papers.
We are keen to emphasise the interactive nature of a workshop and aim to place discussion and debate at the event’s heart. In order to do this, we will be moving away from the traditional conference format; delegates will be asked to circulate 3000 word papers prior to the event itself and panels will then be run as guided roundtables in which the speakers and audience discuss and reflect upon the material presented in a friendly and supportive environment.
Due to the intensely interactive nature of this workshop, spaces are limited. We have already received generous funding from the Social History Society and we hope to be able to provide some financial support to delegates to cover attendance costs.
If you are interested in presenting a paper at the workshop, please email a short proposal (200-300 words) and CV to Hannah Charnock (hlc220@exeter.ac.uk) or Sarah Jones (S.L.Jones@exeter.ac.uk) by Friday 15th April 2016.
