Call for Papers ASEH disease/environment/space/entomology/human response

California, United States

We are organizing a panel that directly engages the program theme for the 2014 ASEH Conference, “Crossing Divides”.

Our papers currently focus on the intersection of disease, insects/arachnids, and state vs practitioner responses and conceptualizations.

One example is late 19th century responses to American foulbrood, a disease of honeybees, by beekeepers in the Great Lakes Region (southern Ontario and New York state). These responses show resonance with contemporary ideas about sanitation and disease control, and emerging understandings of the role of bacteria. Another example is early 20th century response to Texas Cattle Fever in America. This paper examines Progressive thought, scientific understanding, quarantines, government initiatives, and transnational approaches to disease control.

We are interested to find one or two more panelists whose paper addresses this issue of the environment as seen through the lens of disease, insects/arachnids, borders, and state responses. We welcome papers from all disciplines. If you are interested in joining this panel, please forward your proposal and information to Katherine Teel (katherine_teel@neo.tamu.edu). Deadline for submission is July 1, 2013.
