This session is for those who are actively involved in an educational program at an undergraduate or postgraduate level as of December 31st, 2011.
Presentations on any topic relevant to the history of anaesthesia will be accepted.
The five best papers will be presented before an international panel at the meeting, and the Dr Gwen Wilson prize awarded following adjudication. Authors of papers deemed of sufficient merit, but not in the final five, will also be offered the opportunity to present at an alternative session or as a poster.
All papers must be submitted in full by July 15, 2012 and submitted in MS Word, Times New Roman, 10 point and a maximum of 4000 words plus references. The paper should be identified as being submitted for the Young Historians Session.
The winner of the Dr Gwen Wilson prize will receive:
$500
A certificate
A copy of “One Grand Chain” and “The History of the ASA”
Eligibility Criteria and Requirements
The purpose of the Young Historians Session and Prize is to encourage the study and development of the history of anaesthesia and related fields by anaesthetists in training and other students of anaesthetic history.
Persons in anaesthesia training programs as of the 31st December 2011 (or later) are eligible to enter. Persons enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate university programs of relevance eg. Bachelor of Arts,
Master in the History of Medicine, etc as of the 31st December 2011 (or more recently) are eligible. Approval by candidates other than anaesthetic trainees should be sought in advance.
Essays on any topic on the history of anaesthesia will be accepted. This includes, but is not limited to anaesthesia, analgesia, pain medicine, critical care medicine, veterinary medicine, and dental anaesthesia.
Only one submission will be accepted from each applicant.
Material that has been presented before is eligible for consideration.
Please declare this on submission.
Papers that have been published, or accepted for publication, will not be eligible for consideration.
All submissions must be in English.
A letter from the Department of Anaesthesia Chair, or training supervisor, stating the author was a trainee in good standing as of the 31st December, 2011, must accompany all submissions. Similar evidence must accompany submissions from student enrolled in university programs, eg a statement from their course coordinator or project supervisor.
